Research Assistant in Data Science

Meharry School of Applied Computational Sciences is seeking qualified candidates for the position Research Assistant in Data Science.

Position Description

The Research Assistant will assist the Supervisor in carrying out the research projects on a daily basis (20 hours per week). The main project is to collect and extract knowledge from social media data for event analysis and disaster resilience using data-driven methods. However, the Research Assistant may be assigned to other projects in short term if needed due to business requirements.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for tool development and the design, collection and analysis of project data. In addition, the Research Assistant will work closely with the Research Collaborator for the project. The Research Assistant will also be responsible for writing scientific reports, coordinating research activities, participating in weekly meetings and any other research activities as required. The position is funded under the NSF research award #2219614.

Required Skills

  • Strong programming skills, familiar with Python or R. Familiar with libraries such as Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Keras, Scikit-learn, Tensorflow.
  • Knowledge of data science and deep learning in Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision.
  • Evidence of scientific reports and publications is a plus.

Education requirements

Current master students at MMC or PhD students who have passed their qualifying exam. Preferable to candidates who can spend at least one year in the position.
