Shillingford named chair of Data Science and Computer Science Department


Dean Fortune S. Mhlanga announces Nadine Shillingford, Ph.D., as chair of the Computer Science and Data Science Department.
“Dr. Shillingford combines extensive academic experience with several administration and security engineering roles in retail, health care, and other industries,” says Dean Mhlanga. “That background, and her passion for graduate education, makes her an excellent fit for this role.”
Dr. Shillingford joined Meharry SACS in January 2023 as associate professor, computer science and data science. She had previously served in the roles of senior security engineer, project manager, chief diversity advocate at Stage 2 Security. Her 13 years of progressive academic appointments include serving as professor of practice at Lipscomb University, and assistant professor at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Andrews University.
She holds a doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Science in Software Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from Andrews University.
Her career includes significant diversity initiatives. In academia, Dr. Shillingford participated in multiple outreach programs with the goal to encourage females and other underrepresented groups to pursue STEM careers. Dr. Shillingford participated in groups such as the Indiana Women in Computing (INWiC), Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS), and the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC).
In addition to her role at SACS, Dr. Shillingford is also an author and artist. Her new book, “Data Analytics with Splunk 9.x,” was published in January 2023.
