Ph.D. Biomedical Data Science student Loni Taylor’s work to visualize big educational data with speed and accuracy has been published in the journal “Multimodal Technologies and Interaction” (MTI), a leading international peer-reviewed journal for data visualization research.

Taylor worked under the mentorship of Vibhuti Gupta, Ph.D., assistant professor, computer science and data science, at Meharry SACS and Kwanghee Jung, Ph.D., associate professor of educational psychology and research associate at Texas Tech University.

They highlight the increasing importance of visualizing educational big data swiftly and accurately, emphasizing the potential to enhance student learning and faculty productivity. Their research addresses the limited integration of machine learning advancements in educational decision-making tools, proposing a practical implementation utilizing machine learning and visualization techniques with K-12 state assessment data from Texas and Louisiana, demonstrating cost-effective and timely solutions for visualizing and analyzing educational data.

Taylor who has experience working in both the technology and education sectors, sees this research as an important tool.

“Public schools lose money all the time,” says Taylor. “In socioeconomically disadvantaged communities it is more devastating as they cut funding for two of the most valuable resources that can benefit students, teachers and, technology.”

She sees this research as an opportunity to address the resource costs of tech advancement through a tool that bridges that funding gap.

“We have provided a solution that benefits students by giving their schools a problem-
solving resource they can use to remain relevant,” she says.

The paper, “Leveraging Visualization and Machine Learning Techniques in Education: A Case Study of K-12 State Assessment Data,” is part of the Special Issue Data Visualization and is available online.
