Shumit Saha, Ph.D. joined Meharry Medical College as an assistant professor of biomedical data science, in the School of Applied Computational Sciences in December 2023. He is committed to advancing a patient-centered research program through technologies that enhance digital health interventions and empower equitable outcomes for patients living with chronic conditions.

Dr. Saha’s research has focused on developing artificial intelligence (AI) embedded mobile and digital technologies, such as wearables, smartphones, and applications, to improve the management of chronic diseases. To manage chronic diseases, including heart failure, sleep apnea, diabetes, and asthma, he has developed several algorithms utilizing advanced signal processing and AI techniques. Dr. Saha has profound expertise in working on several data sets including speech, snoring, breathing sounds, accelerometer, nasal airflow, oxygen saturation, ECG, and EEG. He also pursues big data analysis of large-scale surveys and electronic health records (EHR) to enhance equitable public health care and to support or evaluate policy.

He has successfully secured more than $600,000 in funding as a principal or co-principal investigator and has published more than 15 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals. Additionally, Dr. Saha has mentored and trained more than 10 students and professionals in the field of data science and biomedical engineering and served as an editorial board member for Scientific Reports‑Nature Publishing Group.

Prior to his Meharry appointment, Dr. Saha served as an assistant scientist at the University Health Network, Canada, and held a cross-appointment as an assistant professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.
