The faculty at Meharry SACS are leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning and other data science techniques to address health disparities and improve health care for all communities. At the same time, we work to ensure the algorithms behind these cutting-edge technologies are trustworthy and transparent.

We apply our research in impactful areas such as computational biology, cybersecurity, drug repurposing, predicting cancer and other health risks, genomics, clinical trials, wearable devices, geographic information systems, and population health informatics. This research also informs the classroom experience as our research labs are tied to the classroom, supporting a practical approach to learning that is important to the School’s curriculum.

We also collaborate with our colleagues across Meharry Medical College as well as investigators from other institutions and members of the health care, tech and business communities. By working together to provide solutions to society’s great challenges and in particular a transformative education, we continue to make a positive impact on our communities and the sciences.

Spring 2024 Capstones

Spring 2024 Student Capstone Projects

This month, students in the spring capstone class are presenting their capstones, the final step in completing their master’s programs in data science or biomedical data science. Their research applies artificial intelligence, machine learning and other data science models in the following projects. The capstone presentations will be held Thursday, May 2.

Ghosh and Shillingford paper awarded at International Internet of Things Conference

Uttam Ghosh,Ph.D., associate professor of cybersecurity, and Nadine Shillingford, Ph.D. chair and associate professor, computer science and data science, received Third Place, Best Paper in the Full Paper category at the Sixth IFIP International Internet of Things Conference.

Student research

We emphasize a practical approach to learning. Our students engage in individual and group projects using real-world data. In addition to master’s program capstone project and the doctoral dissertation, students can apply for research assistant positions where they will gain valuable experience work closely with faculty on a project.

Real-world experience that prepares students to lead with data.

Graves participating in maternal health equity mentoring program

M.S. Biomedical Data Science student Sade Graves is participating in the Maternal Health Equity Coordinating Center Summer mentoring program funded by HRSA Maternal and Child Health Bureau.

NIH R25 Scholars 2024

Three Meharry SACS students named NIH R25 Scholars

Jean-Hus Theodore, Micaiah McDonald, and Dodji Kuwonu are the Summer 2024 NIH R25 Scholars for Meharry SACS. Scholars will spend 10 weeks participating in summer training and research with a faculty mentor.

Capstone projects

The capstone is the culminating project for each student in the M.S. Data Science and M.S. Biomedical Data Science programs. The comprehensive, real-life industry-type projects are oriented toward the student’s domain of interest.

Each capstone project includes:

  • formulation of a question to be answered by the data;
  • collection, cleaning and processing of data;
  • choosing and applying a suitable model and/or analytic method to the problem; and
  • communicating the results to a non-technical audience.
